Lamps

LampsLamps are wonderful items of decoration for a home that are both beautiful and functional. In a world of overhead lights, they are often overlooked and forgotten when it comes to home décor. But if included in your budget, they are an area in which you can find some unique flavor and personality to add to your environment.

There are a large variety of lamp designs to choose from, and they can function for a large variety of tasks. Depending on your need, you can find floor lamps, table lamps, wall-mounted lamps, desk lamps, halogen lamps and even lava lamps.

Floor and table lamps usually are used to provide room lighting in place of, or in addition to, overhead lighting fixtures. These can be installed with different bulb wattages. If a variety of lighting settings is desired, a 3-way bulb might be the best option as it can provide different wattage in one bulb, allowing for low, medium and bright light settings. Lamps can be dim to provide mood lighting, bright to provide plenty of night lighting, and anywhere in between for whatever lighting your home might need.

One major use for table and desk lamps is often for reading. Many people choose to read in bed before falling asleep, and having a lamp on a nightstand next to you, or a desk lamp clamped to the headboard of a bed can allow a person to get drowsy and ready for sleep without having to get up out of bed to shut off the bedroom light before drifting off to rest for the night.

Some lamps like wall-mounted lamps and lava lamps are more geared toward decoration than lighting. Wall lamps can provide a nice, subtle addition of decoration to the room without being required to provide a lot of lighting. They can be used to punctuate an item of art, or as an item of art themselves. Lava lamps are a quirky design which calls back to the 60s and many people find them to be a fun addition to their home.

Something to keep in mind besides the design of the lamp stand and shade is the type of bulb you want to use. Incandescent bulbs are the traditional choice and have been used in homes for many decades. They offer many wattage and lighting colors, for a whole selection of lighting styles that will add to the décor of your home as much as the lamp design itself.

However, as many families are becoming more environmentally conscious and choosing to use more energy efficient items in their homes, they are finding that simply changing the type of bulbs they use for their lighting can reduce the home energy cost.

Compact fluorescent lamps and halogen lamps are two longer-lasting, more energy efficient choices for lamps. Halogen lamps are smaller sized bulbs that provide a whiter, brighter light than traditional incandescent bulbs. They can often be found inside desk lamps and mood lighting in restaurants.

Compact fluorescent bulbs are increasing in popularity as people have gotten used to their unique shapes and designs and manufacturers have been providing more selection to match that of the incandescent lamp. These days it's possible to find a compact fluorescent bulb for any incandescent bulb you might be using in your home.
